The Impressive Magic of Elderberry: One Mom’s Quest for Better Health for Her Family
By Jennifer Hilado
I’m a big believer in elderberry and all the benefits it provides. It has kept my children and me healthy since we began using it and I’ll never go back.
I have three kids — twin nine-year-olds and a five-year-old. Before I decided to try elderberry, they were always getting sick.
If you have kids, I’m sure you’re well-acquainted with the fact that a lot of germs are shared at school. School-age kids are always sick and there’s no way around that.
Or is there?
Like many of you, I assumed it was just the way it was. I remember being sick when I was a kid in school so, of course, mine are going to get sick too.
Then I heard about this supplement that is amazing for improving your immune system. It made sense — treat the root cause by boosting the immune system. It comes in all kinds of forms and is so easy to use.
You guessed it — it’s elderberry.
My friend, Katie had been using elderberry supplements for her children for a while. After a few months, she noticed a huge improvement in their health. They weren’t catching colds anymore!
Now I’m seeing the same with my kids and it is amazing.
Colds are few and far between and when they do catch one, it’s a lot less severe. In the times we live in now, I am so thankful to have a powerful tool like this to keep my kids healthy.
So What Is Elderberry?
Elderberry is a fruit that comes from the Sambucus tree. There are many variations of this tree but the species that is used for most medicinal elderberry products is Sambucus Nigra.
It grows mainly in Europe. The tree produces flowers which are also used for medicinal properties, although the berries are more commonly used.
Throughout history, people have used many parts of the plant for the treatment of all sorts of ailments.
But, it is important to note that uncooked berries, bark, and leaves can be toxic. If ingested, it could cause an upset stomach.
When the parts of the plant are cooked, the toxins are boiled off and it is then perfectly safe to consume.
Honestly, I would love to try and grow a Sambucus Nigra tree in my backyard. It would be so amazing to have such easy access to it.
The plant produces lovely clusters of flowers in the spring and summer. Then in the fall, they become the precious berries I have come to love.
What Are the Benefits of Elderberry?
The cooked flowers and leaves have been used in the past to treat pain and inflammation. In modern times, the tree’s berries are more commonly used.
The berries are often cooked to form a juice or tea that is used to treat the symptoms of viral infections, like the cold and flu.
But it doesn’t stop there — it can also be used as a laxative, a diuretic, to treat inflammation, pain, and even sciatica.
Studies have shown that there are benefits to using elderberry. It has antiviral properties and can prevent viruses from entering our cells.
This makes it much harder to become sick in the first place. Sounds amazing, right? And those times that you do manage to get sick; taking elderberry can shorten the illness.
Even today, many people have turned to elderberry as a more natural way to treat their families’ viral illnesses.
How Do You Consume It?
You can find elderberry in many different forms, making it very easy to take. Pick the one that’s right for you.
- Gummies
- Juice
- Elixir
- Capsules
- Syrup
- Dried berries
In all its forms, elderberry is packed with vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants.
You can buy it in a form that’s already cooked and prepared for you, or you can buy the dried berries and make it into anything you can think of.
I prefer using an elixir and adding it to tea or juice. You can also just take the elixir on its own.
Elderberry is not too sweet; a little tart, and it pairs wonderfully with lemon, apple, and peach. If you get some dried berries, you can cook them and strain the juice into a delicious fruit recipe.
Products created from these amazing berries are easy to find. You will find it everywhere from your local grocery store to an online specialty shop.
Is It Right For You?
If you decide to give elderberry a try, find the method that works best for you. I prefer to drink it but many people enjoy the gummies.
Whether you choose to take it regularly to give your immune system a boost or only take it when you feel a cold coming on, it is sure to work wonders for you.
It has been amazing for my whole family’s health and wellness. I am so thankful I decided to give it a try and I’m sure you will be too.
